Seriously, Check Your Air Filters!

8/14/2014

We cannot stress enough the importance of clean air filters. A dirty air filter is one of the most common causes of an air conditioner freezing up. Your air conditioner requires good airflow for proper operation. A dirty air filter can obstruct the airflow which, in turn can cause your unit to ice up. You see, the warm air from your home is needed to keep the coil above freezing. Without the warm air the condensation will freeze up on the coil instead of draining away.

When ice forms on your AC unit, it cannot cool properly. This also puts a lot of strain on your compressor. If you run your unit when there it ice on it, you may end up needing a costly repair, or you may even have to replace your unit. Even new systems can ice up and break down.

You should check your air filters AT LEAST once a month, and during peak season, you should check them more often. You may be surprised at the amount of dirt that collects on them. Also check your intake registers to be sure that there is nothing blocking them. Your air conditioner is a valuable part of your home. This simple maintenance procedure is vital to ensuring that it gives you many years of effective and efficient service.

If you have an old air purifier, then it is required that you check its filter continuously as it may be jammed and won't give you desired results.

Remember, Some older vehicles have permanent air filters, and some off-road vehicles have more-complex filters with wet and dry elements. Clean and replace these according to the instructions in your owner’s manual.

It got me when you said that the unit's compressor can get strained because of an unclean filter. I wonder if that is the cause why we need an AC compressor repair now, because we were not able to get the filters replaced before summer. Hopefully, a professional can find the root cause of the issue effectively so that it can still be fixed this time.

Thanks for helping me understand that the unit will not cool our property well if there are ice formations which can also affect the compressor negatively. I have to hire an air conditioning repair service tomorrow to check on my system after noticing some ice in it. Hopefully, the damage is not severe because I have a limited budget at the moment to afford a replacement.

I appreciate you saying that you should check your air filters at least once a month and more frequently during peak season. My mother complains that the air filter is filthy. I'll advise her to call an HVAC company to have the air filter cleaned.
